If you are suffering with hair loss, you may be deciding between a follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure for a fuller head of hair. Many patients considering these therapies have a number of questions about the differences between them. To help you choose the hair restoration method that is right for you, Drs. Robert True and Robert Dorin can explain the process, candidacy, and advantages of FUT and FUE during a consultation at our practice serving Manhattan, NYC, and communities throughout greater NYC. The FUT procedure involves the harvest of follicular units, which are naturally occurring groups of 1 to 4 hairs. These follicle units are excised from a strip of donor scalp, usually located at the back of the head. After the section of the scalp is extracted, the follicle units are then individually removed for transplantation. The focus during any form of follicle transfer is harvesting quality roots to help ensure a successful graft.
Also known as a strip excision procedure, FUT has become the dominant form of hair transplant over the last several years. Patients can enjoy a procedure that fills in thinning areas of the scalp with transplanted hair, and incisions that are virtually undetectable. Our surgeons take great care in minimizing the appearance of scarring, so you can rest assured that people will notice your thicker hair, and not the evidence of your surgery. By employing an advanced technique while closing the incision, your hair can grow directly through the scar, concealing it in a way that makes it almost invisible. In addition, the donor strip section is usually small enough to be covered by existing hair, so patients can go about their lives without worrying about clear signs of their procedure.
Advantages of FUT
One of the most significant advantages of FUT over FUE is that large numbers of follicle units can be transplanted in one session. During an FUE treatment, the greatest number of follicle units transferred is about 2,000. On the other hand, an FUT may involve the transfer of 4,000 follicle units. The FUT method also allows for "super sessions", where up to 5,000 follicle units are transferred in one appointment. For patients who need to transplant a large quantity of follicles, these super sessions provide a great convenience, and are often the most economical option. FUT is also the recommended form of treatment for patients who cannot commit to multiple surgery dates.
Although our surgeons have advanced a method that greatly improves the follicle survival rate during FUE, FUT still has the higher rate of follicle survival. For this reason, patients with limited hair availability in the donor area are often recommended for FUT treatment.
