How Much Time Should I Take Off Work after Hair Transplant Surgery? By Robert True on December 13, 2018

A man after hair transplant surgeryHair transplants are an excellent way to restore your hairline. Like any procedure, patients want to know what to expect before, during, and after their hair restoration surgery.

For instance, how much time should you take off work after hair transplant surgery? Today, our team at True & Dorin in New York, NY answers this question and explains what patients can anticipate following their treatment.

Taking Time Off of Work following Hair Transplant Surgery

At our practice, hair transplants can be performed using either the FUE (follicular unit extraction) or FUT (follicular unit transplantation) method.

FUE is less invasive compared to FUT. But no matter which option you choose, we recommend taking about one week off of work. Though this may not be necessary in every case, many of our patients find that this time is beneficial during the early healing process.

Can I Exercise after My Hair Transplant Surgery?

Like most surgical procedures, patients will need to take some time off from exercise routines after their hair transplant surgery.

In general, patients can resume normal activity within 48 to 72 hours. However, it is important to obtain clearance from your doctor before going back to the gym.

Hair Transplant Recovery Timeline

You will see a change in your scalp immediately after your hair transplant procedure. However, it can take several months to achieve full results. In the sections below, we will explore each stage of recovery in more detail.

Immediately following Your Procedure

After your hair transplant, you will notice the shape of your new hairline. However, it will not look aesthetically pleasing yet, as the follicles will have some degree of scabbing around them.

Fortunately, due to the small incisions, these areas will heal quickly. Most side effects, such as tenderness and inflammation, will diminish after five to seven days.

Two Weeks to Five Months Post-Op

About two to three weeks following your hair transplant, you may notice small hairs falling out. Do not be alarmed; this is a necessary part of the healing process. During the procedure, the follicles are replaced. As they grow, they will “push out” old hairs and allow for new growth near the roots.

Because hair grows approximately one centimeter every month, it may take some time to achieve your desired results. Many patients begin to see their final appearance around four to five months after surgery. However, it could take up to 18 months for some individuals.

Long-term Results

Once you have fully recovered from your hair transplant surgery, you can trim and dye your hair as you wish. After a year or two, no one will even know you have undergone a hair restoration procedure.
