About Female Hair Loss
The most common cause of hair loss in women is genetics. Female pattern alopecia can cause women to begin to lose hair in their 20s. This can be triggered by the hormones of pregnancy, and by the onset of menopause in older women.
Women commonly experience female pattern alopecia in what is called a “Ludwig classification,” with loss concentrated on the top, frontal area of the scalp behind the hairline. This thinning can be mild, moderate, or extensive, but most women experience no more than mild or moderate hair loss.
Some women follow a pattern more typical of male hair loss, called androgenic alopecia, along the hairline. Others, with angular alopecia, lose hair on the sides of the head only. In rare instances, women experience hair loss in a diffuse pattern, occurring all over the scalp (diffuse alopecia). Diffuse alopecia is typically not treatable with hair transplantation.
Hair loss can also result from injury or trauma, such as a burn or repeated use of tight braids. Plastic surgery patients are sometimes left with loss of hair at the incision lines.

Hair Transplant Treatment for Women
Female hair loss can be treated with the same techniques used to treat male pattern baldness. The most effective hair restoration treatment is hair transplantation, a minor surgical procedure that Dr.’s True and Dorin have successfully performed on thousands of patients.
Drs. True and Dorin use advanced hair transplantation techniques called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). In both procedures, hair harvested from your scalp is used to replenish the areas where you are experiencing thinning. Most women retain good hair density on the back of the head, an optimal donor site to use for hair transplantation. FUT harvests strips of hair follicles from your scalp, while the minimally-invasive FUE technique extracts individual hair follicles from the donor site. The follicular grafts are then transplanted into tiny incisions in balding areas, replenishing hair density and establishing new growth.
With hair transplantation, women usually notice fuller, thicker hair after one surgery, but may require repeated treatments to achieve optimal results. < In 4-6 months, significantly increased density will be evident, with full hair growth experienced after 9 to 12 months.

Other Restoration Treatments
True & Dorin recommends several non-surgical hair restoration treatment options for men and women. These include:
- Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy -- PRP is created from your own blood, which is treated to increase the concentration of growth-stimulating platelets. Injected into the scalp, PRP has been found to halt and reverse hair loss and stimulate inactive follicles into active growth.
- Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) – Laser light therapy is another method of halting hair loss and stimulating regrowth. True & Dorin provides recommendations for laser cap therapy - the laser cap can provide stabilization of hair loss, reverse miniaturization and enhance hair thickness following proper protocol.
- Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) - SMP is a method used to camouflage a patient’s thinning hair. SMP is a permanent cosmetic tattoo that mimics the look of short hairs on a closely shaved scalp. For women, it can be used to fill in mildly thinned areas with pigment, concealing the scalp and creating the appearance of increased density. True & Dorin offers in consultation information and referrals in regards to this process.
