Regrow Hair After Scarring Due to an Injury or Operation

scalp scarHead trauma or a surgical procedure can often result in a noticeable scar on the scalp. Depending on the severity of the injury or the extensiveness of the procedure, patients can be left with minimal scarring or a scar that is thicker and more noticeable. Scarring alone can impact your appearance and confidence, and additionally, the area will typically lack hair. If you have experienced head trauma or undergone an operation, Dr. Robert J. Dorin and Dr. Robert H. True can help you regrow hair after scarring with various hair transplant techniques. We have several convenient locations serving Manhattan, NYC, and greater NYC.

Why Are Scars Hairless?

Healthy skin contains glands which produce natural oils and also grow hair. In contrast, scarless tissue does not contain these necessary glands. Although hair will continue to grow around the area, it will never grow directly over the scar. In some cases, nearby hair follicles will grow hair that penetrates the scar, creating the appearance that regrowth has occurred. But if an injury is more severe, resulting in a deeper cut, nearby hair follicles underneath the skin may also be damaged.

Transplanting Hair for New Growth

If scar tissue has left you feeling self-conscious about your appearance, or if you would simply like to restore your hairline to its previous state prior to your head injury or surgery, we can help.

Whether you received a small laceration or underwent a major operation that left you with substantial scarring, our doctors can help.

With the advancement of hair restoration and hair transplantation technology and techniques, patients can now achieve regrowth in even substantially scarred areas. Our doctors have performed surgical procedures on many patients just like you, and have been able to successfully conceal head scars through various transplant procedures.

Which Treatment is Right for Me?

During a consultation at one of our offices, Dr. True or Dr. Dorin will closely examine your scalp and the severity of the scar. Depending on the size of the scar and how badly the underlying tissue has been damaged, we may recommend either a follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or a follicular unit extraction (FUE). Although both techniques involve the extraction of healthy hair follicles from another area of your head, such as the base of the cranium (just above your neck), the processes do have some major differences. We will discuss your candidacy in-depth during a consultation and provide a recommendation that best meets your needs.
