Why a Hair Transplant Consultation Matters

Your consultation is the first step toward a plan that fits your hair goals and schedule. You’ll meet with a surgical consultant (a Hair Loss Doctors patient) and Dr. Robert J. Dorin, who also struggled with hair loss. We’ll evaluate your hair loss, medical history, and goals, answer your hair loss and procedure related questions, and discuss both surgical and non-surgical hair restoration options.

Many patients want to know what happens during a hair transplant consultation. The process is designed to provide clarity, set expectations, and outline the right path forward. The goal is not just evaluation, but ensuring you understand your options, timeline, and expected outcomes.

How the Consultation Begins

History & Goals: We review when you noticed thinning, your family history, medications, medical history and your desired outcome.
Scalp & Hair Exam: Dr. Dorin evaluates your hair caliber, degree of miniaturization, donor density and hairline characteristics.
Hairline Design & Planning: Designing your hairline is critical in achieving natural looking results and is often overlooked by hair transplant patients. Yet, this is a vital part of your hair restoration process. We study your current pattern of hair loss and likely progression, so our hair restoration plan has the highest likelihood of looking natural.
Photos & Realistic Planning: We take ‘before’ images to document your current hair loss. When helpful, we review past patient images with similar hair characteristics. The goal is realism and candor. Density targets, design, and coverage are matched to your donor supply.
Restoration Discussion: You will leave with a clear understanding of the pros and cons of each option.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): Individual follicles are removed from your donor area, allowing quick recovery with the potential for tiny dot scars
- Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT): A narrow donor strip is removed and follicles are microscopically prepared for placement. This method is efficient for higher graft counts and can leave a fine linear scar (which can be hidden by surrounding hair). The scar is another aspect often overlooked by patients. A highly skilled hair-specific surgeon such as Dr. Robert J. Dorin often achieves closure results with no discernable scar, allowing many to wear their hair shorter.
- Non-surgical support: Finasteride, Minoxidil, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Exosome therapy, and / or scalp care to potentially help stabilize, maintain or regrow hair. NOTE: PRP and Exosome treatments can also be performed during surgery for enhanced results.

Often the most effective plan combines several approaches over time so your outcome remains natural and age-appropriate.

Candidacy & Expectations

Unfortunately, not everyone is an ideal surgical candidate. Not all hair transplant clinics will tell you that, but Dr. Dorin will. His goal is to ensure patients waste their money if, in his medical opinion, a hair transplant will not have a positive impact on your hair.

If your hair loss pattern is early, diffuse or related to a medical condition, he may recommend medical therapy first or determine that surgery would not provide meaningful benefit.
